“You did what you thought you needed to do… so this is goodbye, forever,” a stoic Graham told DeAnna after she eliminated him at the Rose Ceremony that followed DeAnna’s hometown visits with the four men that were still in the running to receive her final rose.
“I made it perfectly clear what it was like for me the first time here with Brad,” DeAnna told Graham. “Obviously I felt like I had opened up — [that] I had given my heart to someone who felt the same. And in the end I felt like Brad [had] led me on. Brad broke my heart. I needed you to be open and honest and let your guard down and be there for me and right now I feel like I was being led on.”
However Graham disagreed with DeAnna’s comments and accused her attempting to “make it easier on yourself by thinking that,” causing DeAnna — who appeared additionally frustrated about Graham’s non-emotional reaction to his elimination — to angrily vent further.
“Believe me, this is not easy on me Graham!” an increasingly emotional DeAnna told Graham. “You have no idea what I’ve been going through the last few days. You have no idea. You have no idea how hard it was to walk down there and stand there and call out those three names and you stand there swaying back and forth and smiling. You have no idea how hard that was!”
“I can not be with someone who can not open up to me, that can’t deal with problems in a relationship, that can’t talk about things,” DeAnna told Graham as he interspersed her comments with brief sarcastic replies.
“Obviously you don’t see in me what you need to continue on, so your decision is easy now,” Graham told DeAnna derisively.

David Boudia got four perfect scores on one dive, Thomas Finchum matched him with four 10s of his own, and they went 1-2 in the 10-meter platform semifinals at the U.S. Olympic trials Thursday night in Indianapolis.
Boudia totaled 1,091.90 points and kept the lead he has held since the preliminaries. Finchum had 1,065.25, essentially making it a two-man contest going into Sunday’s final.
“It’s almost like performing on stage, and I look forward to showing off Sunday,” Boudia said.
Drew Livingston was third, trailing Finchum by 77.35 points despite earning three 10s.
Diving just ahead of Boudia, Finchum got a 10 on his forward 3 1/2 somersault pike. Two dives later, he received three 10s for a reverse 3 1/2 somersault tuck.
Christina Loukas saved her best for last, receiving mostly 9s on her final dive and increasing her commanding lead in the 3-meter springboard semifinals.
Loukas led by nearly 30 points after the morning preliminaries, and she was even stronger in the evening session, when the scores carried over.
She totaled 729.85 points, well ahead of second-place Nancilea Foster (681.40). Foster was strongest on her first and last dives, receiving bunches of 8.5s.
Word is leaking out from NBA sources about the identity of players who will be selected for the U.S. Olympic basketball team. Tayshaun Prince and Dwyane Wade were identified by sources as members of the team. Several other players including Dallas point guard Jason Kidd and Denver forward Carmelo Anthony have said they have been told they are on the team. The official announcement is scheduled for Monday.
•Spurs coach Gregg Popovich doesn’t want Manu Ginobili playing in the Games for Argentina if his injured left ankle doesn’t improve. A ligament in his heel is about five times the size of the one in his other heel, according to Popovich.

Much has been made this week of Apple’s patent filing for solar panels embedded into the screens of gadgets. In the diagram accompanying the application, we see a layer of solar cells tucked safely behind the glass and the LCD layer, presumably to juice, say, an iPod’s battery as you use it.
Most likely this is one of the many patent filings made when an engineer has an idea. Often there is no intention to pursue the design, but you file anyway, just in case.
But would a solar panel inside an iPod really work? After all, we have had solar powered watches and calculators for years. It’s doubtful. Fortune spoke to Michael Filler, an expert in photovoltaics, and he said that you’d need the solar cells from almost one million watches to power an iPod.
This is slightly disingenuous: It is indeed possible to power an iPod by the sun, you just use a better solar unit. Brunton’s Solaris i6 will put out up to six watts, which is plenty to power a USB device (using P=VI, six watts should give five volts at half an ampere). At $210, though, it costs around the same as the iPod you’ll be using it to charge. And as you can see in the picture, it’s a lot bigger than the iPod’s screen.
Clearly powering something as demanding as a modern iPod by the light of the Sun is impractical. Forbes goes on to discuss the solar-sandwich design:
But despite all the expert testimony, we can’t help but think that everybody is missing the point. Those facts again: First, the power from a panel the size of an iPod screen would be woefully inadequate. And even if a laptop screen is bigger, so are its power needs. Second, and almost perversely if the panel is meant to suck up photons from the Sun, the cells are hidden behind the LCD screen, which is designed to block light. And third, how often is a gadget in bright light anyway? The iPod is almost always in your pocket, and if you use a MacBook in the sun, good luck actually reading the screen.

California law requires property owners in forested areas to remove or reduce most vegetation within 100 feet of a building.
But a state report released last week found that most of the 132 structures destroyed by the fire had “poor defensible space quality.” That figure includes 63 homes and 69 outbuildings destroyed in the mountains above Watsonville.
Fire officials say it’s likely that fewer homes would have been destroyed if homeowners had complied with a state requirement to remove grasses and trees near buildings.
“I would think that there would be less damage, but it’s tough to say,” said Kay Price, a battalion chief with the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “Bottom line is that homes that have defensible space stand a much better chance in a wildland fire than homes that don’t.”
Officials cite a number of reasons why homeowners don’t comply with the law, including the desire to keep their homes hidden and concerns about harming the natural landscape.
Earlier this year, Cal Fire mailed out 2,500 notices to residents in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties notifying them of the law, but officials acknowledge they only reached a small fraction of homeowners in the region because of staffing and time constraints.
“We do as much as we can, but it’s ultimately up to the individual homeowners,” said John Ferreira, the state Cal Fire unit chief who oversees firefighting efforts in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties.
The Santa Cruz County Planning Department also estimates that at least half of the structures in the area were built illegally, which makes it harder to make sure residents are complying with fire safety laws.
Copyright 2008 The Associated Press.

A flurry of acquisitions in the past fiscal year bolstered top- and bottom-line gains for J.M. Smucker Co. despite a fourth-quarter dip in profit, the company told investors Thursday.
The Orrville-based company said its earnings for the fourth quarter ended April 30 totaled $37.1 million, or 67 cents a share, down 13 percent from $42.5 million, or 75 cents a share, a year ago. Part of the decline stems from the absence of a gain on peanut-butter sales, which jumped last fourth quarter when Smucker grabbed more market share as a competitor temporarily left the market.
The quarter also includes a $4 million insurance settlement following storm damage at a Tennessee distribution center and $2.08 million in merger and integration costs, which hit nearly $8 million for the year.
Smucker over the past fiscal year struck several acquisition deals, including the $248 million purchase of Gahanna's Eagle Family Foods Inc. The company also made deals to buy frozen fruit brand Europe's Best Inc. and the Carnation Milk brand, both of Canada, and Knott's Berry Farm.
A $3.3 billion all-stock deal to buy the Folgers coffee line from Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble Co. is pending and should close in the fourth quarter of 2008, the company said.
Fourth-quarter sales increased 20 percent to $590 million from $493.5 million a year ago. The company attributed more than half its sales growth to acquisitions.
Smucker said it suffered in the fourth quarter from margin-squeezing higher raw material costs, mainly for soybean oil and wheat. The cost of sales jumped to 69 percent of revenue in the fourth quarter, up from an unusually low 64 percent a year ago.
Full-year profit grew 8 percent to $170.4 million, or $3 a share, versus $157.2 million, or $2.76 a share, in fiscal 2007.
Revenue for the year increased 17 percent to $2.52 billion, up from $2.15 billion the year before. Acquisitions added about $280 million to sales.

Jamie Lynn Spearshas given birth to a girl at a south Mississippi hospital, according to a friend of the family. The baby was named Maddie Briann . Spears, 17, was the star of a show on Nickelodeon, “Zoey 101,” a sitcom about prep school friends. She is the younger sister of the pop star Britney Spears . The father is Casey Aldridge , 19, a pipe layer from Liberty, Mississippi. The couple is not married but announced an engagement several months ago.
What's a kiss from 007 worth? The James Bond film producer Barbara Broccolihas paid $38,000 for a kiss from Daniel Craig , who plays the suave British spy on screen. Broccoli will also get kisses from Hugh Grantand Robbie Coltranefor her winning bid at a benefit for the National Film and Television School in London. The auction raised $800,000 for the film school. Craig paid $36,000 for an uncorrected proof of the first Harry Potter novel, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone,” published in the United States as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.”
The celebrity chef Gordon Ramsayhas advice for those who don't like his swearing on television: change the channel. Ramsay, a British chef who has become an international television star known for expletive-laden tirades directed at kitchen underlings, became the subject of a parliamentary inquiry in Australia after a lawmaker objected to his prime-time cursing. A Senate panel this week rejected calls to ban certain swear words on Australian television because community attitudes did not seem overwhelmingly opposed to them. Ramsay, who is currently visiting Australia, told Nine Network TV: “I don't mean to swear, it's just the muppets I have to work with sometimes,” he added, using a slang term for a stupid person.
David Hyde Pierce , who will be without a stage when “Curtains” closes on June 29, returns to Broadway next season in a Manhattan Theater Club revival of the 1934 comedy “Accent on Youth.” The play, by Samson Raphaelson, will be directed by Daniel Sullivanand is to begin previews in April. The company announced another production for its Off Broadway City Center theater: Itamar Moses's”Back Back Back,” a play about baseball in the steroids era, which will be directed by Daniel Aukin .

No matter what the calendar read last week, it sure felt like summer for the first few days. Fort-unately, there was plenty to do.
Indian River Inlet can be a difficult place to fish from the rocks. The current rips and foams in dizzying ribbons and the boat traffic can be frenetic. The behavior of the anglers along the rocks can also, at times, remind one that good sportsmanship is most evident by its absence as folks compete, seagull like, for fishing space and fish.
So it was with some trepidation that we found ourselves, boat still in the shop, down at the inlet last week during the middle of the flood tide. Overhead there were a half-dozen ospreys wheeling and piping which kept my wife happy as she watched them on the thermals. More importantly for me and my son, Jack, a flock of birds working the middle of the thorofare meant feeding fish.
Jack and I hopped on a couple of rocks and started at it. Of course we were pretty far from the action and my son’s Gotcha plug fell pretty far short of the mark. After a spell he asked to venture off, on his own, to see if he could find some action. His persistence paid off when his plug was grabbed by a rampaging blue, which he winged over the rail. Jack scampered up and unhooked the fish.
And two adult anglers promptly took his rock.
There was plenty more good news, though. We caught some blues and actually saw most people behaving very well. One angler loaned me a heavy sinker so I could get in on the action, and another offered to let Jack land a thrashing blue. I watched tangles undone with sportsmanship and fish and tackle shared.
In addition to the blues, the nightshift at the inlet has been reporting some nice stripers. Storm lures or live eels seem to be the ticket for the big linesiders.

That’s life. Things happen and sometimes things get a little out of control and you just gotta deal with life,” the “Nashville Star” host said Tuesday.
